Dennis Bermudez's Plan: Defeat Andre Fili, Chug Ketchup For Guinness

You have to be an ultra-competitive person to attempt to beat any of the marks inside of the the Guinness Book of World Records. The book is literally filled with a list of people who needed to be the fastest runner, lift the most weight, and, of course, drink lemon juice the fastest through a straw.

The latter record is held by UFC featherweight fighter Dennis Bermudez.

As the story goes, Bermudez was at a Gamma Labs event and wound up taking part in a contest that was being held for one of the other sponsored athletes. Always the game competitor, Bermudez just happened to take home the gold.

“I was at the right place at the right time," Bermudez told Top Turtle MMA Podcast on FloCombat. “As kind of a joke, everybody tried it. I’ll take a few sips and spit on the guy next to me; it’ll be funny.”

But as they set up the competition, the official nature of the record attempt began to get him jacked up.

“And then they started counting down and I was like, ‘Oh, we’re competing. You know what, Dennis? Give it all you got,'” he recalled.

And it’s those competitive juices Bermudez is hoping to bring to the cage with him at UFC on Fox 27 in Charlotte, NC, on Jan. 27. Currently on a two-fight skid that includes a controversial decision loss to Darren Elkins, Bermudez will be looking to get back on the right track against Alpha Male product Andre Fili.

“[Andre is] more of a stand-up fighter, which is cool,” Bermudez said of the matchup. “He’s got long range so we’re looking to get inside that and work.”

Although his focus is bringing home the "W" at UFC on Fox 27, Bermudez has more record breaking on his mind. After getting a taste of other less violent types of competition, Bermudez has kept the Guinness folks on the hook.

“I’m in cahoots with the Guinness Book of World Records now, and we’ve got three other things I might be able to conquer,” he said proudly.

And it appears that the next record Bermudez will go after will also involve the speed at which he drinks things, most notably ketchup.

“One is to drink a frozen drink. One is to drink ketchup, and the other one is to drink mustard,” he said.

In the meantime, while he prepares for his big fight with Fili, the current record-holder for fastest to drink mustard through a straw can sleep easy.
