UFC light heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir was arrested Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he has been training at Combat Club, on charges of aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability.
Oezdemir (15-1) was held at Broward County Jail on $10,000 bond.
The news was first reported by MMA Junkie.
According to Florida law, aggravated battery occurs when the person “intentionally or knowingly causes great bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement.”
The arrest comes at an awful time for Oezdemir, who many believe was next in line for a shot at Daniel Cormier’s title.
Oezdemir, ranked No. 2 at 205 pounds, made his UFC debut earlier this year with a split-decision victory over Ovince St. Preux.
In Oezdemir's next two fights, the 28-year-old Switzerland native needed just 70 seconds to dispose of Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa. Oezdemir secured a 28-second knockout of Cirkunov at UFC Fight Night 109 in May, before notching a 42-second victory over Manuwa at UFC 214 in July. Oezdemir is currently riding a five-fight winning streak.
The UFC has yet to officially comment on the news and whether it could affect a potential bout with Cormier.
