Georges St-Pierre Holding Out Hope For Michael Bisping Fight
Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre holds out hope he'll keep his bout with Michael Bisping.
Georges St-Pierre still believes there is a chance his bout with Michael Bisping will remain intact, and the UFC could very well being playing games with their recent announcement.
On Wednesday, during a visit to Fox Sports Australia, White revealed the former welterweight king had been removed from the bout and Yoel Romero would be stepping in to fight the current middleweight champion. And while news of the bout with St-Pierre and Bisping being scrapped created a positive push from fans on social media, the Canadian star isn’t quite sure everything surrounding the announcement is on the straight and narrow.
Aside from his three-year hiatus, St-Pierre has a long history of working with the promotion, and isn’t sure if the recent dustup was an attempt from the UFC to strongarm him into moving a date he says can’t be moved up.
The former pound-for-pound great spoke with Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie during a promo stop in Toronto. St-Pierre shared his thoughts on the date fiasco, the bout being scrapped and what he wants to see happen with his fight against Bisping.
“It’s impossible (to fight before October). (White) says a lot of things sometimes. I can’t (fight) before October. It’s not only USADA, there’s a lot of commitments like this (Bud Light event) and stuff. I have a lot of commitments. They knew that before.”
“I can’t say what’s going on. I heard through the news, but it’s my agent who talks to the UFC. The fighter doesn’t talk to the promoter – it’s the agent.”
“It’s the fight I want and it’s the fight Bisping still wants, from what I’ve heard,” St-Pierre said. “I’m focused and I want it, but we’ll see what happens. I still have hope.”
