The two were originally slated to throw down at UFC 205 in November. However, citing the need to recover from his last fight, Lawler removed himself from the card entirely.

Cerrone (32-8) would instead match up with Matt Brown at UFC 206, disseminating him with a vicious third round head kick. Prior to this win, the man known as 'Cowboy' picked stoppage wins over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote and Rick Story.

However, Cerrone's run of success would come to a screeching end after finding on the receiving end a second round TKO to Jorge Masvidal at UFC on FOX 23 in January. This marked his first setback since making the jump up to welterweight.

Prior join the 170-pound division, Cerrone had rattled off eight straight wins as a member of the UFC's 155-pound division. He currently holds 23 career stoppage wins, including 16 by way of submission.

Lawler (27-11), also a former Elite XC Champion, most recently saw Tyron Woodley walk away with his belt after being finished early in the first round of their main event title fight at UFC 201. Prior to this crushing defeat, Lawler defended welterweight crown with a hard-fought decision win over Carlos Condit at UFC 195 in January. Both men earned Fight of Night while finding themselves on the shortlist for Fight of the Year.

His win over Condit also marked the second straight performance from Lawler to garner such acclaim. He previously finished Rory MacDonald early in the fifth round with a skull rattling TKO in co-main event of UFC 189. Once again, the two were awarded Fight of the Night for their efforts, while earning several Fight of the Year awards from various media outlets.

UFC 213 is currently set to go down on July 8 in Las Vegas. While UFC officials haven't confirmed, a heavyweight rubber match between Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem is expected to take place on the card.
