It looks like the UFC's return to Manila has hit some rocky waters, as UFC Fight Night 97 has been canceled.

FloCombat confirmed with multiple sources close the situation the card slated for Oct. 15 in the Philippines has been scrapped. Shortly after the news went public, UFC.com issued a statement regarding the situation.

"Athletes scheduled to compete on the Oct. 15 card will be rebooked at upcoming UFC events in the near future. Each athlete set to compete on Oct. 15 will also receive compensation due to the card being rescheduled. With its 2016 calendar finalized, UFC officials will discuss future dates for the event."

UFC Fight Night 97 initially hit turbulence when MMA legend B.J. Penn was forced out his main event bout against Ricardo Lamas due to injury. The promotion publicly stated they were seeking a replacement to fight the Chicago native, but it appears those efforts fell short.

Penn carried the lion's share of the star power at Fight Night 97, and without the Hawaiian scrapper stepping into the Octagon, it appears as if the UFC chose to take a mulligan in Manila.
