With 2015 drawing to a halt, it makes sense to look back at the stellar year of boxing we had. Over the course of the next week, FloBoxing will be breaking down the best fights and knockouts of 2015. In this installment, we will be looking at top 5 fighters in professional boxing this year.

5. Anthony Joshua’s Breakout Year

2015 has been a gargantuan year for British boxing. At the forefront of British boxingÂ’s renaissance in 2015 has been Anthony Joshua. Since winning gold in London at the 2012 Olympic Games,  heavy hitting Joshua has captured the minds of the British public. A highly entertaining fight with Dillian Whyte capped off a stellar 2015 for Joshua.

While casual fans will point to his fight with Whyte as the only fight of note for Joshua in 2015, it is important to remember that the Brit knocked out four other men over the course of the year too. 2016 could well lead to a big money match for Joshua and I would not be surprised if he was holding a major world title by years end.

4. Tyson Fury Becomes The Heavyweight Champion Of The World

Love him or hate him (we understand if you hate him) Tyson Fury has had an absolutely amazing 2015. This time 12 months ago, no one would have pegged the British brawler to beat Wladimir Klitschko, but he did just that and in the process became the most well known heavyweight fighter on the planet.

Unlike his predecessor,  FuryÂ’s personality has earned him a lot of media attention and he has became one of the most controversial figures in all of sports, but in the ring Fury has been phenomenal. An all-British match up with Anthony Joshua could potentially be on the horizon for Fury in 2016, but first he will be rematching Klitschko.

3.  Mayweather Ends His Career In Style

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is without a doubt the best fighter of his generation, but in 2015, his final year as a fighter, the American wasnÂ’t quite impressive enough to win a spot as my fighter of the year. In MayweatherÂ’s penultimate fight of the year, he faced Manny Pacquiao in what is considered the biggest fight of all time.

While Pacman vs. Mayweather didnÂ’t provide the fireworks that casual fans wanted, Mayweather put on an absolute clinic over his Filipino foe. Over the course of 12 rounds, Mayweather picked apart his opponent and absorbed almost no damage. Mayweather close out his career with a dominant win over Andre Berto.

2.  Canelo Comes Into His Own

Saul “Canelo” AlvarezÂ’s talents have been clear to see for all fight fans for years, but 2015 really acted as his coming out party. CaneloÂ’s 2015 began with perhaps the most impressive performance of his career, a 3rd knockout over the supremely talented James Kirkland in Houston, Texas.

Canelo closed out 2015 with a close-out of all-time great, Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas. Following his loss to Mayweather, Canelo has improved meteorically and he was pipped at the post to becoming fighter of the year.

1. Gennady Golovkin Mesmerizes With His Brilliance

GGG is the most feared man in the world of prize fighting. Throughout 2015, Golovkin has inspired boxers around the globe with his blend of brute force power and sublime technique. In his first fight of the year, GGG stopped tought UK fighter Martin Murray, in what would become a prelude for 12 months of violence.

Gennady Golovkin closed out the year with knockouts of Willie Monroe Jr. and David Lemieux, who had a great year himself. Golovkin was truly a notch above everyone else in 2015 and he is finally starting to become the star that he deserves to be.

2016 will be amazing for Golovkin and as luck would have it, it appears that GolovkinÂ’s next fight will be with our number 2 pick, Canelo Alvarez. A fight between GGG and Canelo would be an instant contender for fight of the decade.
