OÂ’Neil Bell, the former Jamaican-born cruiserweight champion, was shot to death during an attempted robery in Atlanta on Wednesday morning. He was 40 years old.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, two armed men in a vehicle shot and stabbed Bell after he got off a MARTA bus on Harbins Road. A second man was shot in the right hip and remains in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Bell moved to Atlanta in 1995 and worked as a driver for UPS before becoming a professional boxer three years later.
“Give ‘Em Hell” Bell won the vacant IBF cruiserweight title in 2005 over Canada's Dale Brown. After one successful defense, he then knocked out Jean-Marc Mormeck to become the WBA and WBC cruiserweight champion, making him one of only two “undisputed” cruiserweight champions in history. Evander Holyfield is the only other boxer to do so, achieving the feat in 1988. Photo: Atlanta Police DeptAtlanta police are seeking the man in this image from video surveillance. He is a suspect in the killing of O'Neil Bell. Bell, who later changed his moniker to “Supernova,” lost his titles in a rematch with Mormeck before suffering two more defeats. His final fight was in 2011 a 58-second TKO over Rico Cason. He finished his career with a record of 27-4-1 (25 KOs).
According to police reports, at least four people may have been involved in the shooting. They are looking for a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser with the Georgia license plate TJC685.
Police believe the vehicle was stolen Tuesday in East Point and used in a robbery there on Tuesday night. Police released a video of the vehicle and an image of a person seen by witnesses exiting the vehicle.
Bell is the second former boxing champion to be killed in Atlanta. In 2009, former welterweight and super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest, was robbed at gunpoint and murdered at a gas station. Forrest was a 1992 Olympian and best known for his two victories over “Sugar” Shane Mosley.
The three men responsible for ForrestÂ’s death were convicted, with two sentenced to life in prison and the gunman receiving the death penalty.
