Wrestling fans will have two compelling reasons to tune in to LFA 244: Woodley vs Havener: Jake Woodley and Joziah Fry.

Woodley, a former NCAA Division I All-American, headlines the event Friday, Oct. 23, against Zayne Havener for the vacant LFA middleweight championship.

Fry, a three-time NCAA Division III national champion at Johnson & Wales, also is scheduled to compete on the card as he continues his transition from collegiate wrestling to mixed martial arts.

The event at the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, offers wrestling fans a chance to see how two accomplished athletes are applying their mat skills to MMA.

Here are three reasons for wrestling fans to watch LFA 244: Woodley vs Havener.

1. Jake Woodley Brings An NCAA Wrestling Background To The Main Event

Woodley is one of the most intriguing fighters on the card for wrestling fans.

Before pursuing a career in MMA, Woodley competed for the University of Oklahoma, where he became a four-time NCAA championship qualifier and earned All-American honors in 2021 at 197 lbs.

He also won two Pennsylvania state championships in high school.

That background provides a foundation for his approach to MMA, where wrestling can help determine where a fight takes place. Takedowns, positional control and the ability to dictate exchanges can be significant advantages against opponents who prefer to keep the fight standing.

Woodley enters LFA 244 with an 8-1 professional record and will face Havener, who is 6-2, for the vacant middleweight championship.

The winner will leave Mashantucket with the title and a significant milestone in his professional career.

For wrestling fans, the main event is an opportunity to watch a former collegiate standout apply his experience in a different combat sport.

2. Joziah Fry Is Taking His Championship Pedigree Into MMA

Fry gives wrestling fans another reason to watch LFA 244.

Before turning professional in MMA, Fry built one of the most accomplished careers in Johnson & Wales wrestling history. He won three consecutive NCAA Division III national championships at 125 lbs from 2023-2025 and earned All-America honors each season.

Fry's 2024-25 season was particularly dominant. He finished the campaign undefeated at 43-0, recorded 165 takedowns and won 22 matches by technical fall on his way to a third national title.

Now competing in MMA, Fry is scheduled to face Yve Nelson in a flyweight bout at LFA 244. Fry enters with a 1-0 professional record, while Nelson is 3-2.

Wrestling fans will have a chance to see how Fry adapts the skills that made him a national champion to a sport that also demands striking, submission defense and the ability to operate inside the cage.

3. See How Wrestling Skills Translate To MMA

Woodley and Fry arrive at LFA 244 with different wrestling backgrounds, but both offer a look at how success on the mat can create opportunities in MMA.

Woodley developed his skills through Division I competition at Oklahoma, including a run to the NCAA semifinals in 2021.

Fry, meanwhile, dominated Division III competition at Johnson & Wales, finishing his collegiate career as a three-time national champion.

Their fights will provide different examples of how wrestling experience can be applied in MMA. Fans can watch for the use of positioning, balance, pressure and takedown defense, while also seeing how each fighter handles the striking and submission elements that distinguish MMA from collegiate wrestling.

For fans who follow wrestling and enjoy tracking athletes after their collegiate careers, LFA 244 offers a chance to see two accomplished wrestlers pursue success on a new stage.
