Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar sounds like fun, eh?

According to McGregor, the matchup was almost booked for UFC 222 on March 3.

Taking to Instagram, McGregor explained how he offered to save the show when Edgar's original opponent, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway, fell off the card with an injury.

For his part, Edgar's manager, Ali Abdelaziz, refutes McGregor's claim.

ESPN's Brett Okamoto with the goods:

While Edgar eventually landed against another top featherweight prospect in Brian Ortega at the event, it's impossible to ignore how amazing a last-minute McGregor vs. Edgar scrap could have been.

McGregor last competed inside the UFC Octagon at UFC 205 in November 2016, when he defeated Eddie Alvarez to capture the UFC lightweight title. Now 15 months removed from that fight, pretty much any McGregor sighting inside the cage would be welcome.

To that point, McGregor's post makes it sound like he's set on coming back.

"I am fighting again. Period. I am the best at this," he wrote.

Who it'll be standing across from him when he returns is anybody's guess, but one thing is certain: The world will be watching.
