Bellator 192 Results: Chael Sonnen Advances, Rory MacDonald Wins Title

Bellator 192 took place Saturday, Jan. 20, at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. The event was headlined by the opening bout of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix between Chael Sonnen and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and a welterweight title fight between champion Douglas Lima and challenger Rory MacDonald.

Jackson and Sonnen pulled main event duties, while Lima and MacDonald warmed up the crowd in the co-main event.

When the two welterweights entered the cage, MacDonald immediately looked to impose his well. MacDonald (19-4) used his length to keep Lima (29-6) on the outside before deciding to take the fight to the mat and dominate position for the remainder of the round.

After some back-and-forth action in the second round, action temporarily halted with MacDonald kicking Lima below the belt.

When the action restarted, MacDonald looked to take the fight back to the ground, but Lima was able to fight off the attempt and remained with his back against the cage to close out the round. MacDonald once again controlled position in Round 3, but Lima was not taking any serious damage while MacDonald was showing wear and tear on his face.

Lima was chopping away at MacDonald’s legs and eventually forced the challenger to collapse onto his back. The systematic approach allowed Lima to finish the round on top.

To start Round 4, MacDonald shot for a quick takedown but ended up mounted by the champion. Lima remained on top for a majority of the round, but MacDonald eventually got on top with a takedown of his own.

MacDonald managed to take an early take down to start the final round and began throwing some vicious ground-and-pound looking to close out the fight. MacDonald managed to ride out top position to send the fight to the judges’ scorecards. MacDonald earned an impressive decision to claim welterweight gold.

For the main event between Jackson (32-12) and Sonnen (29-15-1), Rampage entered with a 31-pound advantage. Sonnen opened up the bout faking a takedown and following with an overhand left that continued to find its home early. The two men eventually clinched before Rampage threw Sonnen to the mat and allowed the fight to get back to its feet.

After getting the better of the striking throughout the opening frame, Sonnen closed out the round with a takedown. He transitioned to Rampage’s back and threatened with a rear-naked choke before transitioning to a guillotine as the buzzer sounded.

Sonnen put the pressure back on Rampage in the second round, controlling the clinch against the fence before landing his second takedown of the fight. Sonnen was dominating the fight from top position and temporarily threatened with an Americana.

“The American Gangster” once again wrestled his way to the end of the round. In the final round, there was more clinch work against the fence before Sonnen danced around on the outside to avoid Rampage’s strikes.

A visibly frustrated Rampage was urging Sonnen to engage, which ended with a takedown as 60 seconds remained on the clock. The fight ended with Sonnen avoiding any damage in the fight.

Sonnen earned the unanimous decision win (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

He advances to face the winner of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir - which takes place in Chicago in April - in the semifinals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix.
