The UFC’s heavyweight division is about to get an injection of intrigue.

Richmond, British Columbia, Canada’s Arjan Bhullar, 31, took to his Facebook page on May 18 to announce that he had signed with the UFC to compete in their heavyweight division. Bhullar becomes the first fighter of Indian descent to be signed by the UFC and could be the promotion’s gateway into the large Indian market.

“Another glass ceiling has been smashed. It’s official, we are headed to the UFC!” Bhullar said on his Facebook page. He added, “I will proudly represent the Maple Leaf (sic) and be the ambassador for over 1.7 billion South Asians. I fully appreciate the significance of this moment, and understand the seriousness of the task at hand. We will prepare accordingly.”

Bhullar is a Sikh of Indian descent won gold for Canada at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. In 2007, he took home a bronze medal at the Pan American Games, which took place in Rio De Janeiro. He represented Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England.

To date, Bhullar is 6-0 as a mixed martial artist, including three stoppages. He has competed on Canada’s west coast for promotions such as Hard Knocks Fighting Championship and Battlefield Fight League.

No date has been announced as to when Bhullar will make his UFC debut.
