Conor McGregor will face Eddie Alvarez in a champion-versus-champion super fight Nov. 12 at UFC 205 inside New York's Madison Square Garden.
The bout will be contested at 155 pounds, and the UFC lightweight title will be on the line.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the news on SportsCenter late on Monday night. Twitter user @TalkMMA first reported the deal being finalized earlier in the evening.
McGregor, the UFC's featherweight champion, most recently competed at UFC 202 Aug. 20, where he defeated Nate Diaz via majority decision in a welterweight contest.
The Irish superstar won the UFC's 145-pound title in December 2015, when he knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194. Since winning the belt, McGregor fought twice, each time against Diaz at 170 pounds. In facing Alvarez, McGregor looks to become the UFC's first concurrent two-division champion. White noted on SportsCenter that despite previously saying McGregor would have to relinquish the belt if he didn't defend it, McGregor will indeed be allowed to keep his title through the event.
Alvarez, meanwhile, last competed at UFC Fight Night 90 in July, where he defeated then-champ Rafael dos Anjos via first-round TKO. Prior to that, Alvarez had won back-to-back split decisions, narrowly defeating Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis.
With this main event in place, UFC 205 now boasts three title fights in McGregor vs. Alvarez, strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and welterweight champion Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson.
The event also features high-profile showdowns in Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy Stephens, Tim Kennedy vs. Rashad Evans, Kelvin Gastelum vs. Donald Cerrone, Miesha Tate vs. Raquel Pennington, Tim Boetsch vs. Rafael Natal, and Liz Carmouche vs. Katlyn Chookagian.
The full card will be confirmed tomorrow during an official UFC press conference in New York City.
