Miller steps in as a replacement for Al Iaquinta, who today explained to FoxSports.com why he will not face Alves on the historic card.

Miller is currently enjoying a career resurgence, having put together back-to-back victories. He kicked off his winning streak with a first-round stoppage of Takanori Gomi at UFC 200, and then defeated Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox 21 via decision, where he also picked up a Fight Of The Night bonus.

Before that, Miller had lost two fights in a row and had been struggling to deal with Lyme Disease, which had impacted his training and performance. With that now under control, Miller has been more active than ever. With the bout against Alves in place, he will have fought three times in just over eight months.

Alves, 21-10, has been away from the UFC Octagon for quite some time, but not due to injury. The Brazilian has been working on progressively moving his body weight down so that he can successfully make the move from welterweight to lightweight.

Alves, 32, was last seen back in the Octagon in May 2015, when he was beaten by Carlos Condit via TKO. Prior to his loss to Condit, Alves had put together back-to-back wins against Seth Baczynski and Jordan Mein.
