The UFC featherweight belt has been the hot topic this past weekend, but one of the 145-pound division’s biggest names could well be considering his options one weight division lower.

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is one of the men caught up in the congestion at featherweight right now and while he patiently waits for his opportunity to fight for the 145-pounds title, he’s said that a move down to 135-pounds isn’t out of the question.

“I think I’m ok right here [featherweight], but if someone offers me a title shot it’s going to be real tough to pass up,” Edgar told UFC Unfiltered. “I’m not asking for it, but if they came to me and asked if I wanted to fight for a title at 135-pounds I’d strongly consider it.”

“Cutting weight sucks and without the title I wouldn’t, but that’s a little more enticing.”

Despite having witnessed his training partner Eddie Alvarez be put to the sword by Conor McGregor a few weeks ago, Edgar was still confident that he’d be a tough stylistic match up for the Irishman.

“I think so, I think I match up well against him,” Edgar said. “With the right game plan, I think I do [give him trouble]. I mean look what Chad Mendes did to him, I would do that to him the whole time not just a round and a half”.

Asked whether he’d be able to put up McGregor’s mind games leading up to the fight, the New Jersey native again said he’d be confident of handling whatever the UFC lightweight champion would be able to dish out.

“Yeah I think so, but it’s easy to say when the guy is standing across the table from me at a press conference talking a bunch of shit,” Edgar said. “That might get under my skin a little, but I’d like to think I would handle it in the smartest way.

“I thought Eddie handled all that stuff that way, but I think the magnitude of everything and the fight might have got to him when he stepped in there on fight night. In the buildup I thought he did alright in all the exchanges with Conor and I didn’t think he took it too personal and he did alright with that.”

Having beaten Jeremy Stephens at UFC 205 earlier this month, Edgar has his sights on a quiet festive period and then a return in 2017 on another fight card close to home.

“I’m just hoping to get on that Brooklyn card,” Edgar said, talking about UFC 209 on February 11. “I’m reaching out for that, but we will see what happens.”
